Total amount of municipal waste produced per person in Aberdeen
Data taken from SEPA Landfill Allowance Reports and General Register Office for Scotland.

Facts & Figures:

  • On average, Scotland used to increase the amount of municipal waste produced by around 1% each year.
  • This trend has recently been reversed, with an national average reduction of 5.2% between 07/08 and 08/09.
  • Aberdeen City has seen a 4.6% drop in the amount of municipal waste between 07/08 and 08/09.

Targets:

  • The Scottish Government is committed to stopping the growth of household waste by 2010.
  • This reduction target is largely being driven by the 1999 EU Landfill Directive (99/31/EC). This piece of legislation sets targets for all Member States to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

Reuse

Composition of Household Waste

Composition of Household Waste
Data taken from a study by Parfitt for WRAP (2002).

Facts & Figures:

  • Over a typical year a significant proportion of household waste could be reused. Unwanted textiles, furniture and white goods are perhaps the most obvious.
  • Furniture, white goods, textiles and nappies account for 16% of a typical households waste however, many of these items could be reused (or substituted for reusable alternatives).

Targets:

  • It is very difficult to set targets for reuse because it is difficult to measure reuse as items are collected and redistributed through many different sources. However, reuse will help us to reach the Scottish Government’s target of stopping the growth of household waste by 2010.

  • The rates of recycling and composting between different local authority areas does vary however, this is probably due to the phased introduction of services and difficulties in collecting materials in very urban and very rural areas.
